This is a cool clock radio. The numbers are large. The radio sound is clear. The alarm works perfectly. I would reccommed it for anyone who needs to get up at a certain time each workday–just set it and forget it.

This is a very good alarm clock because you can acually see the time from far away. The only down side that I have found out is that the alarm needs to be a little louder, but it will still wake you up.

I bought this alarm clock as a gift. The products, I assume, are refurbished? Which is no big deal, but the first one we got did nto keep time. Seriously. We’d plug it in, the time would be correct, and two hours later, the alarm clock was like, an hour and 18 minutes fast. Totally crazy and useless. The second one works much better, but note that the time is pre-set–NOT a satellite link to the atomic clock.
The “wave” feature for the snooze alarm is TOALLY AWESOME for non-morning people.

We loved the large orange digital display which we can both read without our glasses. Other plusses are:
    1) The automatic Daylight Savings Time management
    2) Easy setup
    3) The dual alarms which we can be set for weekends and weekdays so now we don’t have to change the time or turn off one alarm and activate the other for the weekend when we can sleep in a bit later

A minor minus is that it isn’t actually connected to the NIST atomic clock.

The only big minus we have for it is the “Wave” function that seems to work randomly with some frequency. It will activate/deactivate when I know that nobody (or nothing) moved in the room, much less within its advertised angles/range. Sometimes even when we were behind the clock. It was so unreliable that I have neutered the motion sensor on the front with a very small piece of electrician’s tape which is fortunately, practically invisible. If this doesn’t work out, it’ll be time to look for a similar alarm clock to replace this one that doesn’t have this “Wave” function.

Like – The large display; Good control over display brightness; Dual alarms; Displays the alarm times or “off”; Alarms are easy to set; The sound from the radio, given it is not a stereo unit, is good and clear and the volume is very good; The initial setting of the time was automatic, and I expect the shift to daylight saving time will be also (If not setting the time manually is easy.);It displays the day of the week.

Hokey, but works – The “wave” for turning the display (Which goes black when wave is set) back on and for causing the alarm to go to snooze mode.
The alarm starting quiet and getting louder the longer it runs (But, it is not obnoxious!).

Dislike – The buttons to turn the alarm off when it comes on are hard to find and small. It is a “fatter” than the photo shows – about 3 1/2 inches at the base.

This is an excellent clock. It displays 2 alarm times in red and displays OFF instead of the alarm time if the alarm is not set. The best thing about it is the alarm dismissal button. It isn’t an off button. It doesn’t turn the alarm off forever, making you turn it back on again if you ever want to hear from your alarm again. It just turns it off until the next day that it’s supposed to go off, and it’s a large enough button on the top.

The motion sensor on mine is a little iffy, but I don’t care. I don’t really need that. Sounds cooler than it is useful. If my hand’s right there waving anyway, I might as well touchdown and be done with it.

One thing that I love is that this is a large display. It doesn’t take up much desk space, being mostly vertically constructed, but it’s an unusually big display.

I bought a clock because I wanted to replace my dual-alarm clock radio. I selected this one because it also had the atomic clock function (it automatically sets the time). The unexpected surprise was the function that lets you set the clock’s display to a dark mode. You just wave your hand over the sensor and the display turns on. This sensor also works as the snooze “button”. I love it. The only bad thing about it, is the actual sound quality of the radio. Not the greatest, but I don’t use it as a radio, so it doesn’t matter to me when I hear a small snippet of music before I snooze or turn it off.

    Pros:
    - The clock has two alarms, and you can have them set up so that 1 is for weekdays and the other for weekends. I don’t use that feature, but it’s nice.

    - The clock is large, and even has the time of the alarms shown at the bottom for ease.

    - Intuitive buttons for changing time.

    Cons:

    - The motion-sensor is extremely buggy. I had to eventually put sticky-notes over it so that it would stop going into “Snooze” mode and activating the alarm all day. Kind of an eye-sore now.

    - Even though I purchased a NEW clock from Amazon, the Daylight Savings Time was wrong (AGAIN), so now I have to change the time 4 times per year, instead of the normal 2 times for a normal clock. (“Smart” Clock indeed.)

Conclusion: Only purchase a “Smart” Clock if it has been developed within the past year or so.

This is fabulous if it works. In our case the date function stopped working which was okay but now it doesn’t automatically set the time itself either. You can’t set it yourself. Not good for day light savings folks.

There are two things I absolutely detest about most digital alarm clocks now on the market.

First, they have tiny displays, which – for someone as nearsighted as I am – is a significant problem: I don’t like having to make it a major production to find my glasses in the dark (or turn on the light and then hunt for them) just to figure out the time. That much messing around at 2:00am is certain to leave me tossing and turning for much longer than will a casual glance at a nice BIG display like this unit has.

Second, Why put these bright green or blue displays in alarm clocks? Research has already shown that blue or green lights tend to disturb one’s sleep. With such units, I often feel like I’m sleeping next to a searchlight. Annoying, to say the least! Red displays, such as this unit has, do not interfere with sleep as much. (Ah, for the days when industrial designers only had red LED’s or black on white liquid crystal displays at their disposal!)

Setting up this unit was a snap. I unboxed it, plugged it in, watched it set itself to the proper time (it defaults to the US Eastern Timezone), and then set it on a shelf – done. It works great, and I’m sleeping much better now!

I have found other alarm clocks with big displays, but few clock radios with large displays – and none with large RED displays. It seems that nearly every industrial designer out there thinks the whole world has 20/20 vision and uses a sleep mask!

RECEIVED THIS CLOCK RADIO TODAY IN THE MAIL. I BOUGHT IT BECAUSE IT AUTOMATICALLY WILL SET ITS SELF. TO MY GREAT DISAPPOINTMENT IT DID NOT. AS A MATTER OF FACT THE INTERNAL BATTERY THAT KEEPS IT GOING IS DEAD. HOW NICE THAT I NEED TO GO OUT AND BUY A NEW BATTERY FOR SOMETHING THAT SHOULD HAVE WORKED OUT OF THE BOX. SEEMS TO ME THIS MAY HAVE BEEN ON THE SHELF WAY TOO LONG.

SOME WOULD SAY SEND IT BACK. UMMMM….LET ME SEE. SEND IT BACK AND WAIT FOR REPLACEMENT OR JUST GO GET THE BATTERY. TIME IS OF THE ESSENCE. JUST WANTED YOU ALL TO KNOW TO BUY THIS ITEM AT YOUR OWN RISK.

The stupid thing keeps gaining time, when I unplug it to try to reset the time, it sets itself to the new incorrect time! What good is an alarm clock that doesn’t even know what time it is?

  13. #13 by B from Chicago on April 9th, 2009 - 5:29 pm

Simply the best Alarm clock I have ever came across.

It will set the time on its own. It will tell you the day of the week on its own. It has 2 alarm that can be individually set. The alarms tell you if they are set or not set and for what time. Good radio quality. It also has a timed display off feature for if you don’t want to sleep with any lights and come back on with a wave of your hand.

This is quite amazing. A little large in back, but well worth any size.

This clock is large with a display that is a great size for the nearsighted. Unlike my previous clock, the display can be dimmed to a tolerable level and still be readable. I bought it because it has two alarm setting readouts on the front. The radio is surprisingly good. It would be perfect if it had atomic time set, but that wasn’t important to me.

I have had the original smart clock from Emerson Research for over 10 years and it’s still going strong. I will be purchasing this version because I want to upgrade. The older clock will go into my second bedroom–still working fabulously! Never any problems with original clock–no complaints.
Great product and idea–way to go Emerson!

Just the right size although side buttons are small and hard to find when you’re half asleep. The time color/size is good and having a dual alarm is a great feature for 2 people who have different schedules. I also like the graduating alarm tone. Also loved the fact that I didn’t have to set the time to start and that it resets itself after a power outage. Easy to set up and learn about the features. Overall a nice addition.

The clock and alarm function work fine, and relatively easy to do. I like the alarm function as it gets slightly louder the longer it rings until paused or shut off. The size really is Jumbo. My last Emerson was half the size and I think slightly too big. I read the dimensions before hand but just didn’t think it would be that much bigger. My mistake. Otherwise it does it’s job.

I read quite a few negative reviews and many positive. I received the order in 2 gays, As soon as I plugged it in it had the correct time. After 5 minutes of reading the rest of the instructions I set the 2 Alarms to test it. They worked perfectly as did the wave. The Digits are large enough to see from the oposite side of the room. They are not to bright at full illumination. The ascending alarm was not very loud, but I don’t need it loud as it is only a few feet from my bed. AM Radio never works in that particular part of the room on electrical power. FM is somewhat better, but I have a fine Stereo System and also a few Portable Receivers that work very well bought right here at Amazon. I really didn’t need the Radio but could not find anything that had these features without the radio. This is my last Alarm I will ever need to buy. I had another same size Digits from Radio Shack but only one alarm and the buttuns were very hasr to press it was the 2nd one. I placed it on the other side of the room and can see it from down the Hall. Don’t have to set the Alarm and the Battery Back up works fine as well.
